  • 1 loaf white bread cubed
  • 8 eggs large
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 cup fresh blackberries
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • butter for greasing

Method
 

  1. Generously butter a 9x13 inch glass baking dish.
  2. Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes and spread evenly across the bottom of the prepared dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and milk until completely combined. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are coated.
  5. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly across the top.
  6. Distribute fresh blackberries randomly across the top, pressing slightly into the cheese.
  7. Cover tightly with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  8. Remove from refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for 20 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  9. Remove covering and bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes until golden brown and center is set.
  10. Let rest for 10 minutes before cutting and serving.

Notes

Day-old bread works best for optimal texture. Can substitute blackberries with blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries. Add cooked bacon or sausage for extra protein. Freezes well for up to 3 months.
